Term 2 Learning
This term in reading comprehension and writing, Maple class have been using, ‘The Winter’s Child’ as our class text to write character descriptions and a persuasive letter. Y3 also wrote winter poetry too, which were
amazing. In phonics we have learnt some of the rules for adding es, ing and ed. These will also be in the term 3 home learning spelling lists.
In Maths, firstly we worked through an addition and subtraction (Y2 with numbers to 100 using the Part-Part Whole model and pictures of dienes equipment to show our working out. Y3 worked with numbers to 1000, using blank number lines or the column model to show our working out). Then we did a multiplication and division unit (Y2 used equipment and images to understand the concepts of grouping. Y3 worked on counting and the 3x, 4x and 8x tables). We finished off with a geometry unit. (Y2 have counted vertices, edges and faces on 3D shapes. Y3 have been using horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular lines in their shapes.
We looked at early settlements in geography; Skara Brae in the UK, compared with Monte Verde in Chile. We labelled the countries of the UK and the continents of the world. In science we have been learning about sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. In Art we have made an advent calendar and Christmas cards using textiles. We have also squeezed in an Advent service and a Nativity too!
Term 3 Learning
In English, we’ve been working on narrative writing with Mrs Noah’s Pockets and reading comprehension with The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, focusing on fluency and prosody. Thank you to Mrs Annis, Mrs Maidment, and Mrs Devitt for their support. In phonics, we’re revisiting alternative vowel digraphs and word suffixes/prefixes. Welcome to Mrs Hillier, who is focusing on handwriting joins.
In Maths, Year 2 has covered multiplication and division (2x, 5x, 10x tables) and is now measuring and reading scales. Year 3 has worked on fractions and is now adding and subtracting three-digit numbers using column and number line methods.
In Science, we’re studying plants, their growth, and parts. Geography covers counties in the southwest and compass points. In PHSE, we’ve set personal learning goals. Art involves mixing secondary colours and exploring brush techniques. In French, we’re expanding vocabulary on food and clothing. In PE, In2Sport is focusing on gymnastics. Mrs. Clarke continues music lessons with instruments and Charanga.
Term 4 Learning
As part of a rotation, we all evaluated our healthy snacks after eating them at home. We recorded our results after leaving a hard-boiled egg in; vinegar, water, orange, apple, coke and tea and have yet to write a conclusion linked to our teeth. In PHSE we discussed how to eat healthily and exercise so we made exercise plans. Finally, please see the photos of all the oil pastel sketches of crocuses on your Mother’s Day cards.
Also in the afternoons, we have been practising how to say in French how old we are and where we live. Mrs Clarke continues to teach music; Mrs Hillier has taught RE and In2Sport have been teaching dance in PE.
Our class text in reading has been Sheep Pig but we have also been answering comprehension questions from unseen texts too. In writing we have been using; ‘Fly, Eagle Fly’, to stimulate our own narratives. Then we wrote non-fiction non-chronological reports about an eagle and a persuasive speech about zoos, using rhetorical questions.
In phonics we have recapped; silent letters, alternative diagraphs and trigraphs for ‘j’ (ge and dge) and how to add suffixes, when the vowel is short, e.g. chopped or when it is long, e.g. racing. Then we added er, est and ly to root words. Finally, we have made plurals and should know when to add s, es or ies.
Year 2 have used their multiplication skills of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s in money and time in maths. They have also been trying to master a rapid recall of doubling and near doubles using rekonrecs.
Year 3 have been using their rapid recall of the 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x and 6x tables to multiply 2-digit numbers using a column method and then dividing larger numbers using their understanding of the hundreds, tens and ones digits. They used money to build on adding and subtracting using the column method.
